Despite OpenAI's ChatGPT maintaining its lead as the world’s most popular chatbot, rival services are showing significant growth. Data from analytics firms Similarweb and Sensor Tower reveals that other platforms like Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and xAI’s Grok are gaining traction. While ChatGPT boasts over 500 million weekly active users, competitors are fiercely vying for the second spot. Mobile app user bases are also expanding due to new model releases and features.

Growth Trends Among Competing Chatbots

Recent data indicates a surge in usage across various chatbot platforms. According to Similarweb, Google’s Gemini experienced a 7.4% month-over-month increase in web traffic, reaching an average of 10.9 million daily visits globally in March. Similarly, Microsoft’s Copilot saw a 2.1% rise in daily visits, totaling 2.4 million. Anthropic’s Claude garnered 3.3 million daily visits, while China’s DeepSeek surpassed 16.5 million visits during the same period. Notably, Elon Musk’s xAI Grok matched DeepSeek’s figures with a remarkable 800% month-over-month traffic increase.

The competition is heating up as several chatbot platforms continue to expand their user bases. Although DeepSeek initially gained prominence in January, its traffic dropped by 25% in February. However, xAI’s Grok has demonstrated impressive momentum. Despite these fluctuations, the overall trend points towards increasing adoption rates among alternative chatbot solutions. Analysts attribute this growth not only to new models but also to enhanced capabilities and functionalities introduced by companies like Google and Anthropic. These advancements have significantly contributed to attracting more users to explore these platforms.

Influence of New Features on User Engagement

Beyond model updates, the introduction of innovative features plays a crucial role in boosting user engagement. Sensor Tower reports that Anthropic’s Claude app witnessed a 21% week-over-week increase in weekly active users following the release of Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Similarly, Google’s Gemini app experienced a 42% growth in weekly active users after making Gemini 2.0 Flash generally available. Such enhancements reflect ongoing efforts by tech giants to refine their offerings and meet evolving consumer demands.

New capabilities such as Google’s “canvas” feature for previewing coding project outputs and Anthropic’s steady addition of tools within its Claude client underscore the importance of feature-rich experiences. Senior insights analyst at Sensor Tower, Abraham Yousef, highlights that the rollout of popular new AI models, heightened consumer interest, and diverse use cases collectively drive user growth. While OpenAI remains dominant, with ChatGPT commanding ten times the combined mobile app weekly active users of Gemini and Claude as of March, the landscape remains dynamic. This suggests that continuous innovation will be key for all players aiming to sustain or capture market share in this rapidly evolving sector.
