The Sacramento Kings have secured the return of veteran forward Doug McDermott, finalizing a one-year agreement. This move sees McDermott embark on his second stint with the franchise and his twelfth season within the National Basketball Association. The terms of the deal indicate a salary of $3.6 million, aligning with the veteran minimum for players with over a decade of experience in the league. This signing underscores the Kings' strategy to reinforce their roster with established talent, adding a reliable presence known for his offensive contributions.

McDermott's signing was confirmed by his representatives, Mark Bartelstein and Andy Shiffman, to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The agreement for the 2025–26 season ensures that a seasoned professional, renowned for his perimeter shooting, remains within the Kings’ fold. During his previous season with the team, McDermott’s on-court presence was somewhat restricted, as he featured in 42 contests. Despite this, his efficiency from beyond the arc was noteworthy, maintaining a respectable 43.6% success rate on three-point attempts, even with an average of just 8.1 minutes per game—a career low in terms of playing time.

Now at 33 years of age, McDermott’s journey in professional basketball began after a stellar collegiate career at Creighton, where he was the 11th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. While his professional career hasn't mirrored the dominating performances he displayed in college, he has consistently proven himself as a vital floor-spacer and an astute off-ball offensive player. His ability to create space and move intelligently without the ball is a valuable asset to any offensive scheme, contributing to team fluidity and shot creation.

However, it is also acknowledged that McDermott’s defensive capabilities present challenges, occasionally making him a target for opposing offenses. This aspect of his game has been a recurring discussion point throughout his career, indicating an area where teams might seek to exploit matchups. Nevertheless, his primary role and value stem from his sharpshooting and offensive acumen, which the Kings clearly intend to leverage in the forthcoming season.

The return of Doug McDermott on a one-year veteran minimum contract represents a strategic re-acquisition for the Sacramento Kings. His proven ability as an effective three-point shooter and his veteran experience offer valuable depth and offensive spacing, aiming to bolster the team's performance in the demanding NBA landscape.
