Samsung's robust Galaxy XCover series of smartphones have consistently prioritized durability over advanced photographic capabilities or sleek designs. These devices are crafted for individuals whose professions demand a phone capable of withstanding harsh environments and accidental impacts. The previous year's Galaxy XCover 7 model upheld this tradition, offering a resilient build, a user-replaceable battery, and extensive software support. Now, Samsung appears to be developing another XCover iteration, which might include an unconventional feature not typically found in smartphones.

Reports suggest that a new Samsung device, identified by the model number SM-G778B, has surfaced on Geekbench, equipped with Qualcomm's Dragonwing Q-6690 processor. The remarkable aspect of this chip is not its processing power but its integrated RFID reader. For those unfamiliar, RFID technology employs radio waves to identify and monitor tagged items. It is widely utilized in warehouses, retail establishments, and logistics operations for managing stock. Unlike barcodes, which typically require individual scanning within close proximity, RFID tags can be detected wirelessly from a distance, enabling efficient, bulk scanning of multiple items without direct physical interaction.

Qualcomm asserts that its Dragonwing Q-6690 processor integrates an ultra-high-frequency RFID reader directly, potentially negating the necessity for a separate module. This integration could significantly enhance the utility of Samsung's forthcoming rugged phone for professionals involved in inventory management or asset tracking. Furthermore, the chipset supports 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and UWB. The Geekbench entry also indicates 8GB of RAM, Android 16, and single-core and multi-core scores of 1,069 and 3,142, respectively. Another significant indicator is a September trademark application for "Galaxy XCover Scan," hinting at a specialized identity for Samsung's next rugged device. While neither the trademark nor the benchmark conclusively confirms their direct correlation, and the processor's RFID capabilities don't guarantee feature activation, these converging pieces of evidence strongly suggest that this Galaxy phone could offer unique features beyond conventional specifications, making it a noteworthy development.

This innovative stride by Samsung in integrating specialized features like RFID scanning into rugged smartphones signifies a commitment to addressing the evolving needs of industrial and professional users. By enhancing device functionality beyond mere durability, Samsung is fostering technological advancement that streamlines operational efficiencies, offering practical solutions and contributing positively to various sectors that rely on robust and intelligent mobile technology.
