This report delves into the latest trends and shifts in the consumer AI product landscape, revealing how rising stars are closing the gap on pioneering technologies.

Innovation Accelerates: The Race for AI Supremacy Intensifies

The Evolving AI Landscape: New Entrants Challenge Market Leaders

Leading AI chatbots such as Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok are progressively narrowing the performance gap with OpenAI's widely recognized ChatGPT. This insight comes from the latest consumer AI market analysis published by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, marking the fifth installment of their comprehensive report.

Consistent Performers: A Core Group of AI Innovators

For the fifth consecutive time, a consistent group of fourteen companies has maintained their position among the top AI products. This elite group includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, Character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, ElevenLabs, Photoroom, Gamma, QuillBot, Civitai, and Hugging Face. These platforms collectively illustrate the diverse applications of AI in areas ranging from general assistance and companionship to advanced image and video editing, voice synthesis, productivity tools, and model hosting services.

Rising Stars: Companies Making Their Mark in the AI Arena

Beyond the core group, five additional companies have consistently featured in nearly all reports since the inaugural publication. These include Claude, DeepAI, Janitor AI, Pixelcut, and Suno, expanding the scope of AI applications to encompass general usage, interactive companionship, image manipulation, and music creation. Their consistent presence underscores the growing maturity and diversification within the AI sector.

Google's Ascendancy: A Strong Showing in Generative AI

In a notable development, Google has secured four new positions within the top generative AI consumer web products for the first time in the report series. Its entries include Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs. The individual domain presence of these products now allows for independent tracking of their impressive growth, highlighting Google's strategic expansion in the AI domain.

Data-Driven Insights: The Foundation of the AI Market Report

Andreessen Horowitz bases its report on robust data, leveraging insights from reputable third-party market intelligence firms. Specifically, Similarweb provides analytics for web product performance, while Sensor Tower contributes comprehensive data on mobile application usage, ensuring a well-rounded and accurate assessment of the AI market.

Gemini's Growth Trajectory: Closing the Gap on Mobile and Web

Gemini, now the second-ranked application, is steadily catching up to ChatGPT in terms of mobile device usage, despite having approximately half the monthly active users. Gemini exhibits a strong preference among Android users, accounting for nearly 90% of its mobile monthly active user base. On the web, Gemini also holds the second position, commanding roughly 12% of ChatGPT's overall traffic, indicating its significant, albeit still secondary, market presence.

Google's Expanding AI Ecosystem: Strategic Product Placement

Google's AI Studio, a dedicated environment for developers to build with Gemini models, has ascended to the tenth spot among top AI web products. NotebookLM closely follows at thirteenth. Furthermore, Google Labs, which serves as a hub for Google's experimental AI projects like Flow, Project Mariner, and Doppl, is positioned at thirty-ninth, showcasing Google's broad investment in future AI innovations.

The Rise of Challengers: Grok and Meta AI Gain Momentum

The report also highlights the increasing competitiveness of Meta AI and Grok, both of which are actively vying for a larger share of the AI application market. Grok, in particular, has demonstrated remarkable growth, securing the fourth position on the web and twenty-third on mobile platforms. This rapid expansion is noteworthy, especially considering Grok's emergence from being solely integrated with X to becoming a standalone application with over 20 million monthly active users since late 2024. Its trajectory further accelerated in July 2025 with the release of Grok 4, driving a nearly 40% increase in user engagement.

Meta AI's Position: Navigating Growth and Privacy Concerns

Meta's general assistant maintains its forty-sixth position on the web, consistent with its March ranking, but has yet to break into the top mobile AI apps list. Its progress has been somewhat impeded by recent privacy concerns, including reports of Meta AI publicly sharing user posts without explicit consent, which has impacted its mobile adoption.

Varied Performance Across AI Models: DeepSeek, Perplexity, and Claude

Conversely, DeepSeek and Claude have observed a stabilization in their mobile growth, with DeepSeek experiencing a 22% decline from its peak. On the web, DeepSeek saw an even more pronounced drop of over 40% since February 2025. In contrast, Perplexity and Claude continue to demonstrate sustained growth, indicating varied market dynamics among different AI models.

China's Growing Influence in Global AI

Chinese AI developers are increasingly making their presence felt in the global market. Several Chinese AI entities have secured spots in the top 20 web rankings, including Quark (Alibaba’s AI assistant) at ninth and forty-seventh on mobile, Doubao (ByteDance’s general LLM product) at twelfth on web and fourth on mobile, and Kimi (a Moonshot AI chatbot) at seventeenth. These platforms predominantly serve Chinese users, with over 75% of their traffic originating from China, indicating strong domestic adoption.

Global Reach of Chinese AI: Exporting Innovation

Beyond their domestic success, seven additional Chinese companies on the web list have successfully expanded their AI technologies internationally. These include DeepSeek, Hailuo, Kling, SeaArt, Cutout Pro, Manus, and Monica, demonstrating China's growing capacity to export advanced AI solutions globally. On mobile platforms, 22 of the top 50 apps were developed in China, though only three are predominantly used within the country, highlighting a strong global presence. Key players in this mobile segment include Meitu (known for Photo & Video Editor, BeautyPlus, BeautyCam, Wink, and Airbrush), ByteDance (with Doubao and Cici), Gauth, and Hypic.

Emerging Innovators: Newcomers on the AI Horizon

Notable new entrants to the main list include vibe-coding startups Lovable and Replit, both making their debut after not being featured in Andreessen Horowitz's March report. Their inclusion is partly attributed to the fact that websites built and published through Replit and Lovable without custom domains appear under traffic for replit.app and lovable.app, respectively, boosting their visibility and traction.

The Next Wave: AI Apps on the Cusp of Breakthrough

Andreessen Horowitz also highlighted promising AI applications on the verge of joining the top tiers. On the web, these include PixAI, Bolt, Blackbox AI, Clipchamp, and Getliner. For mobile, emerging apps to watch are Talkie, Seekee, Photo AI, AI Mirror, and Arvin. This indicates a vibrant ecosystem with continuous innovation and a steady influx of new contenders.

A More Diverse Mobile AI Landscape: Beyond ChatGPT Clones

The mobile list in this report features a record 14 new entrants, marking a significant shift from previous periods. This surge in diversity is largely due to intensified efforts by app stores to curb the proliferation of unauthorized ChatGPT replicas and imitations. This stricter enforcement has fostered an environment conducive to the emergence and success of more original and innovative AI applications, promoting a healthier and more competitive market.
