The Shifting Sands of Social Media: X Faces Decline as Threads Gains Momentum

In the dynamic realm of social media, a notable shift is underway. X, a once-unquestioned leader, is experiencing a downturn in daily engagement, while its competitor, Threads, demonstrates remarkable growth. This evolving landscape is further complicated by recent leadership changes at X, signaling a period of intense rivalry and strategic repositioning within the industry.

Social Media Titans in Flux: X's Declining Grip and Threads' Ascendance

The social media sphere is currently witnessing a fascinating power struggle, with X (formerly Twitter) at a critical juncture. The departure of CEO Linda Yaccarino on a recent Wednesday has coincided with a noticeable dip in the platform's daily active user figures. According to data from Sensor Tower, a prominent app intelligence firm, X's daily active user base has contracted by approximately 10% year-over-year as of the second quarter of 2025.

While X retains a substantial lead, with its user count still 65% larger than Meta's Threads and ten times that of Bluesky, its long-term supremacy is far from assured. On mobile platforms, the competitive landscape is particularly intense. Fresh insights from Similarweb, a market intelligence provider, reveal that Threads is rapidly narrowing the gap in daily active users on mobile. In June 2025, Threads' mobile applications on iOS and Android boasted 115.1 million daily active users, marking an impressive 127.8% year-over-year increase. In contrast, X recorded 132 million daily active users, but with a 15.2% decline in year-over-year growth.

Despite these trends, X maintains an overall larger footprint due to its robust web presence. The platform also boasts a significant advantage in user engagement and loyalty. Sensor Tower's findings indicate that X users dedicate an average of 31 minutes daily to the platform, nearly four times the 8 minutes spent on Threads. Furthermore, almost half (48%) of X's global monthly app users actively engaged with the platform every day, compared to 33% for Threads.

However, Threads' growth trajectory cannot be overlooked. Over the past year, its global daily active users surged by 160% year-over-year, a testament to its continuous feature enhancements and strategic integration with Meta's expansive ecosystem, including Facebook and Instagram, which serve as powerful user acquisition channels. Threads is also aggressively expanding its advertising ecosystem, positioning it as its primary revenue stream. In April, Meta made Threads ads available to global advertisers, and by the following month, introduced video ad trials.

This integration with Meta's vast and experienced advertising business provides Threads with a significant edge, leveraging nearly two decades of expertise in maximizing ad revenues. Meanwhile, X's advertising business has seen a recovery under Yaccarino's tenure, albeit marked by volatility. Advertisers from media and entertainment, shopping, and gaming sectors have collectively increased their U.S. ad spending on X, reflecting a shift from 20%, 14%, and 2% respectively in 2022, to 25%, 22%, and 7% year-to-date in 2025. Leading brands like Apple, Google, Verizon, and Dell have joined X's advertising roster this year, alongside established names such as Samsung and Temu. Guideline's ad intelligence data further highlights this rebound, showing a 62% year-over-year increase in U.S. ad spending on X during the first half of 2025.

Meta's success with Threads marks a pivotal moment, following a history of unsuccessful attempts at launching new social networking applications. By strategically leveraging Instagram's user base and cross-promoting through Facebook and Instagram, Threads has managed to achieve significant traction, now boasting 350 million monthly active users, as reported in Meta's latest earnings. In comparison, Elon Musk has stated that X commands 600 million monthly active users, though as a private entity, X is no longer mandated to disclose its metrics publicly.

This intensifying competition underscores the fluid nature of the digital landscape. Platforms must constantly innovate and adapt to retain their user base and attract advertisers, highlighting the fierce battle for digital dominance.

The evolving dynamics between X and Threads offer profound insights into the competitive nature of the digital social landscape. From a strategic perspective, it's clear that even established players like X cannot rest on their laurels. User experience, continuous innovation, and leveraging synergistic relationships (as seen with Threads and Meta's family of apps) are crucial for sustained growth. For businesses and advertisers, this heightened competition is a double-edged sword: while it presents more diverse avenues for reaching target audiences, it also demands more sophisticated and data-driven approaches to advertising amidst fragmented attention. Ultimately, the future of social media will hinge on platforms' ability to not only attract users but also to foster engaging environments that stand the test of time and evolving consumer preferences.
