Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has experienced remarkable growth, boasting a 180% return in the last year, primarily driven by its expanding influence in the artificial intelligence accelerator sector. This surge has led to elevated valuations, prompting Cathie Wood's Ark Invest to reduce some of its AMD holdings. Despite these divestments, long-term investors may find compelling reasons to maintain their positions.

Ark Invest's decision to offload AMD shares, including a substantial $11.8 million on July 17 as part of a larger $68.1 million sale in July, aligns with its active trading philosophy. While such a pullback might suggest an opportune moment for some shareholders to realize gains or diversify, especially after a period of significant appreciation, it's crucial to consider the broader context.

The stock's current valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 160 and a forward P/E of 65, might appear stretched, implying that its price has somewhat outpaced its underlying fundamentals. However, this high multiple might not be a deterrent to AMD's long-term growth trajectory. Recent announcements from AMD's Advancing AI 2026 event highlighted key growth catalysts, including innovations like the 6th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs, MI400 Series GPUs, and Helios rack solutions, positioning the company as a strong contender in the AI landscape.

AMD projects its total addressable market to reach an impressive $2 trillion by 2030. Given its reported revenue of over $10 billion in the first quarter of 2026 and nearly $35 billion in 2025, the company has only scratched the surface of its potential. Strategic alliances with industry giants such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta Platforms, and Cisco Systems are expected to further fuel this expansion. Furthermore, despite the recent sales, AMD still constitutes Ark Invest's second-largest holding, surpassed only by Tesla, indicating a sustained belief in AMD's future prospects by Wood and her team.

For individuals investing with a long-term horizon, holding onto AMD shares seems to be a prudent strategy, even in light of Ark Invest's recent divestitures. The firm's significant stake in AMD across its funds underscores the company's anticipated rapid growth and its considerable addressable market. Therefore, for investors capable of weathering short-term fluctuations, foregoing Ark Invest's example and maintaining their AMD investments could prove beneficial as the semiconductor powerhouse continues its upward trajectory.
