A Significant Portion of Recent Web Content Exhibits AI Authorship, According to Research

A recent investigation by Pew Research indicates that more than one-third of all web pages published since the advent of ChatGPT display characteristics of being generated or significantly modified by artificial intelligence. This conclusion reinforces other studies highlighting the growing influence of AI in online content creation, coinciding with a separate report by Cloudflare noting that automated bot traffic now surpasses human internet activity.

Pew's methodology involved analyzing nearly half a million English-language web pages from the past five years, utilizing Open Pangram's technology to identify AI involvement. While a random sample of all web pages showed about 10% AI authorship, this figure surged to 35% when the analysis was restricted to pages published exclusively after ChatGPT's launch. Furthermore, the study observed a tenfold increase in AI authorship on .com domains compared to .edu or .gov domains, and a notably lower rate on .org domains, suggesting a varied adoption of AI across different web sectors. The analysis also identified a rise in specific linguistic patterns, such as the use of em dashes, Oxford commas, and particular phrasing, which are often associated with AI-generated text.

The increasing prevalence of AI-generated content on the internet presents both opportunities and challenges.
