The company has introduced new functionalities, playfully dubbed “Pick & Play,” “Search & Play,” and “Share & Play.” These features empower free users to choose specific tracks for playback, locate any song using the search bar, and even instantly play music shared from social media platforms. Previously, free mobile users were limited to shuffled playback with a restricted number of skips. This strategic move aims to increase interaction among its vast free user base, which currently constitutes the majority of Spotify's 696 million monthly active users, exposing them to more advertisements and ultimately boosting the company's ad revenue, an area where CEO Daniel Ek has acknowledged the company's slow progress.
While these new features democratize music access for non-paying users, certain premium benefits, such as lossless streaming, AI Playlists, and Mix, will remain exclusive to subscribers. However, recently launched social functionalities like Messages and personalized daylists will be available across both free and paid tiers, ensuring a consistent social experience for all users.
