The Swiss pension fund, Nest Sammelstiftung, renowned for its commitment to sustainable and ethical investment practices, has once again demonstrated the effectiveness of its approach. Through careful allocation to insurance-linked securities (ILS), managed by various specialized firms, the fund has reported a succession of "convincing results," underscoring the resilience and profitability of these alternative asset classes within its portfolio. This consistent performance highlights Nest's ability to not only uphold its environmental and social governance principles but also to deliver substantial financial benefits for its members.

Driving Sustainable Growth: Nest's Visionary ILS Investment Journey

Consistent Strong Performance from Insurance-Linked Securities

Nest Sammelstiftung, a prominent Swiss pension fund, confirmed another year of "convincing results" from its insurance-linked securities (ILS) investments in 2025. This positive outcome follows an exceptionally strong showing in 2024, where the fund experienced over 20% returns from its catastrophe bond and reinsurance allocations. The fund's strategy focuses on ecological-ethical investments, with ILS forming a crucial component of its diversified portfolio.

Strategic Allocation to Natural Disaster Risk

As an ecological-ethical investor, Nest Sammelstiftung strategically incorporates natural disaster and insurance risk into its portfolio. This is primarily achieved through various cat bond and insurance-linked securities fund strategies. These allocations provide a unique avenue for the pension to generate returns while aligning with its sustainable investment philosophy.

Robust Returns Across Alternative Asset Classes

While specific return figures for ILS investments in 2025 were not disclosed, Nest categorized them as "convincing." More broadly, the pension fund noted solid performance across all its alternative asset class investments. This indicates a well-rounded and effective investment strategy that extends beyond ILS, contributing to overall portfolio stability and growth.

Benefiting from Attractive Risk Premiums

The Nest pension fund emphasized that insurance-linked securities once again capitalized on "attractive risk premiums" throughout 2025, leading to favorable outcomes. This highlights the inherent value proposition of ILS, which offers compensation for bearing specific insurance risks, often uncorrelated with traditional financial markets.

Diversified ILS Management Partnerships

Nest's ILS portfolio is managed by a diverse group of experts. It includes allocations to two natural catastrophe-focused ILS funds: one managed by Swiss Re's dedicated ILS investment unit and another pure catastrophe bond offering from Twelve Securis. Furthermore, Cambridge Associates provides strategic assistance with Nest's overall ILS investment framework, complemented by a smaller allocation to the Leadenhall Capital Partners Life ILS Fund.

Portfolio Growth and Strategic Positioning

By the end of 2024, ILS and cat bond strategies constituted approximately 3.6% of Nest's assets, amounting to nearly CHF 154 million (around US $170 million). This figure grew to nearly CHF 150 million by the close of 2025, translating to approximately US $189 million due to favorable exchange rate movements. As of June 30th, 2026, the ILS component represented 3.3% of the total portfolio, with an estimated value of US $192 million, showcasing sustained growth in dollar terms despite a slight proportional decrease.

Targeted Allocation for Future Stability

Nest Sammelstiftung maintains a target allocation of 3% for its ILS investments, with a flexible range allowing for 1% to 5% of its total assets. This strategic approach ensures continued exposure to the attractive returns offered by ILS, demonstrating the pension fund's confidence in this asset class to provide consistent and valuable contributions to its overall investment performance.
