Harnessing Capital and Expertise for a Resilient Future

Addressing the Growing Demand for Risk Capital

Leopoldo Camara, Swiss Re's Head of P&C Reinsurance for Northern, Central & Eastern Europe, highlighted the urgent need for more capital in the reinsurance sector. This need arises from the expanding and interwoven nature of global risks. Speaking before the 2026 Baden-Baden conference, Camara affirmed Swiss Re's intention to strategically integrate alternative capital, guided by its profound risk management expertise.

The Strategic Role of Diverse Capital Sources

Camara underscored the distinct functions different types of capital play within the industry. He emphasized Swiss Re's enduring commitment to reinsurance, which combines its own capital with a century's worth of specialized risk insight. The company's capital is dedicated to multi-line reinsurance, covering life, health, and property & casualty, as well as both short-tail and long-tail exposures.

Swiss Re's Core Promise: Paying Claims with Expertise

Swiss Re's fundamental business proposition centers on its balance sheet strength, with a primary commitment to paying claims. This core promise is backed by over 100 years of deep risk expertise, which Camara deems essential for sustainable risk transfer. This expertise enables effective risk mitigation, precise measurement, the development of innovative transfer methods, and the judicious alignment of alternative capital when appropriate.

Navigating the Landscape of Systemic Risks

Camara observed a rising prevalence of systemic risks, where exposures are becoming more interconnected and systemic. He identified four principal drivers: the growth of individual risks, such as massive data centers with insured values in the billions; intensified geographic concentration of exposures; increasing integration of supply chain networks; and the amplifying effect of digital and social networks on risk propagation.

Leveraging Alternative Capital Through Strategic Partnerships

During the Q&A session, Camara elaborated on Swiss Re's proven track record in the alternative capital space. The company's dedicated Alternative Capital Partners (ACP) division plays a crucial role in leveraging third-party capital markets. This unit's experience and support enable alternative capital to effectively assume risk, benefiting from Swiss Re's comprehensive market understanding.

Sustained Engagement in the Alternative Capital Market

Echoing Camara's sentiments, Urs Baertschi, CEO of P&C Reinsurance at Swiss Re, affirmed the ongoing importance of the Alternative Capital Partners division. At the 2026 Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous de Septembre (RVS) reinsurance event, Baertschi stated Swiss Re's commitment to remaining a significant participant in the alternative capital market, underscoring its strategic value for the company's future endeavors.
