In a strategic move to diversify its investment offerings, Thrivent introduced two actively managed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on Wednesday. These new additions cater to varying bond investment strategies, aiming to provide investors with options for both income generation and capital preservation.
Newly Launched Bond ETFs Offer Distinct Approaches
The Thrivent Core Plus Bond ETF (TCPB) seeks to deliver current income while also targeting capital growth and total returns. With a net expense ratio of 0.39%, this fund primarily focuses on investment-grade debt securities. However, it can allocate up to 30% of its assets to high-yield bonds. Additionally, TCPB may invest in international debt instruments denominated in U.S. dollars, including those from emerging market companies.
On the other hand, the Thrivent Ultra Short Bond ETF (TUSB) aims to generate robust income while safeguarding capital. Operating with a net expense ratio of 0.20%, TUSB predominantly invests in investment-grade bonds with an average maturity of two years or less. This shorter-duration strategy is designed to mitigate interest rate risks.
Both funds leverage a combination of fundamental and quantitative research methods to select investments. The portfolio team evaluates factors such as financial stability, management quality, and business prospects to identify issuers with stable return potential.
Perspective on the Launch
Kirsten Chang, a senior industry analyst at VettaFi, commented positively on Thrivent's expansion into the ETF market. She noted that advisors have demonstrated a strong demand for active bond ETFs, which experienced record inflows in 2024 and are expected to continue this trend. Thrivent's entry into this space builds on its existing expertise in mutual funds, further enhancing its fixed-income offerings. With over $250 million in assets under management for its first ETF, the Thrivent Small-Mid Cap Equity ETF (TSME), the company is well-positioned to attract more investors seeking diverse investment opportunities.
From a broader perspective, Thrivent's latest ETF launches reflect the growing importance of flexible and tailored investment solutions in today's market. Investors now have access to specialized products that align with their risk tolerance and financial goals, underscoring the evolving landscape of fixed-income investing.
