In the recent National Savings and Investments (NS&I) premium bonds draw for April, two fortunate participants emerged victorious, each securing a £1 million prize. The first winner hails from South Yorkshire, while the second resides in Hertfordshire. This event highlights the life-changing opportunities that premium bonds provide to savers nationwide. Alongside these jackpot wins, over 5.9 million prizes were distributed this month, amounting to more than £412 million in total winnings. These prizes are exempt from UK income tax and capital gains tax, making them an appealing option for many investors.
Among the winners was a participant from South Yorkshire who purchased their winning bond in March 2022. With a total investment of £43,165 in premium bonds, they have now become the third jackpot winner from their region. Meanwhile, another new millionaire emerged from Hertfordshire, holding £50,000 in premium bonds acquired in October 2020. This marks the 17th premium bonds jackpot winner from Hertfordshire. Andrew Westhead, NS&I's retail director, expressed his congratulations, emphasizing the potential of premium bonds to transform lives across the country.
Despite not securing the top prize, other bond holders still stand a chance to win smaller yet substantial amounts ranging from £25 to £1 million. All bonds, regardless of when or where they were purchased, share equal chances of winning. It is worth noting that unclaimed prizes do not expire, allowing individuals to claim winnings dating back to the original 1957 draw. In South Yorkshire alone, there are currently 23,241 unclaimed prizes totaling £867,850, including a significant £25,000 prize from November 2022. Similarly, Hertfordshire boasts 56,335 unclaimed prizes valued at £2,083,850, with several high-value prizes awaiting collection.
Nationwide, approximately 2.5 million unclaimed premium bonds prizes, worth £97 million, remain untouched. To avoid missing out on potential winnings, bond holders are encouraged to manage their accounts online or opt for direct BACS payments into their bank accounts. Customers can conveniently verify their winnings through the NS&I website or via the dedicated app. Although the odds of winning any prize stand at 22,000 to one, the excitement remains palpable among participants. Notably, despite a reduction in the prize fund rate from 4% to 3.8% starting in April 2025, the likelihood of winning will remain unchanged.
This month's draw underscores the immense popularity and appeal of premium bonds as a form of saving and investing. By participating, individuals not only contribute to their financial futures but also retain the possibility of transforming their lives overnight. As the draws continue, the anticipation grows, inviting everyone to check their holdings and perhaps join the ranks of the lucky few.
