Wolfspeed had made substantial investments in constructing state-of-the-art facilities for silicon carbide chip production, aiming for a vertically integrated supply chain. Silicon carbide, known for its superior heat dissipation properties, was initially anticipated to be a cornerstone of the electric vehicle (EV) market. However, the transition to larger 200mm wafers presented unforeseen technical complexities, and concurrently, the demand for EVs began to decelerate. Furthermore, a significant blow came from Tesla's decision to substantially reduce its reliance on SiC, exacerbating Wolfspeed's challenges with underutilized production capacity.

This situation of underutilized factories is particularly detrimental for semiconductor manufacturers, often leading companies to adopt a 'fabless' model, outsourcing production to specialized foundries like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Wolfspeed's fiscal fourth-quarter results continued to reflect these issues, reporting negative gross margins of 25% due to inefficient plant utilization. While adjusted gross margins showed a marginal improvement to negative 19.9%, revenue remained a concern, decreasing by 24% year-over-year to $149.6 million. The company also reported negative operating cash flow of $180.3 million and negative free cash flow of $253.7 million over the past nine months, highlighting a critical need for enhanced liquidity and debt management.

Looking ahead, Wolfspeed anticipates quarterly revenues to remain within the $140 million to $160 million range, with gross margins projected to stay negative. The company projects needing to achieve approximately $800 million in revenue to reach a break-even point for its adjusted gross margins. Despite these financial challenges, a silver lining appears in the form of increasing demand for SiC content in AI data centers, driven by a structural shift towards 800-volt architectures.
