During his keynote presentation, Mullenweg showcased the capabilities of Telex, illustrating how developers could leverage the tool to generate Gutenberg blocks using simple prompts. Telex functions by taking user prompts and generating a .zip file, which can then be installed as a plugin on a WordPress site or within WordPress Playground, an environment that allows users to operate WordPress directly in a web browser without the need for a dedicated host.
While accessible as an experimental service on its own domain, telex.automattic.ai, the tool is still in its nascent stages. Mullenweg himself acknowledged its prototype status, and initial feedback from early testers indicated that Telex still requires further refinement, with some projects encountering issues or necessitating additional adjustments to function correctly. Despite these early challenges, the vision behind Telex is clear: to empower more users to build and customize their websites with ease, aligning with WordPress's long-standing mission to make publishing universally accessible and open source.
This launch follows an earlier announcement this year regarding the formation of a dedicated AI team within WordPress, tasked with guiding the development of AI products that are consistent with the platform's long-term objectives. Beyond Telex, Mullenweg also touched upon other AI-related developments, including a simple AI helper developed during Contributor Day that provides in-browser assistance for WordPress users. He also shared his preference for Perplexity's Comet, an AI-powered web browser, suggesting future possibilities for users to interact with WordPress directly through such interfaces. Addressing an ongoing legal dispute with hosting provider WP Engine, Mullenweg provided a brief update, stating his trust in the legal system to resolve the matter concerning the use of the WordPress trademark.
