Sergio Scariolo, the celebrated basketball strategist, recently received the esteemed Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit from Spain, marking a significant milestone shortly after his second period as head coach of the Spanish national basketball team concluded. This prestigious award acknowledges his extraordinary impact and dedication to the sport within the nation.

The 64-year-old Italian mentor guided the Spanish national squad for a remarkable total of 15 years, serving two distinct tenures from 2009 to 2012 and again from 2015 to 2025. Under his exceptional leadership, 'La Familia' achieved unparalleled success, securing eight major international medals. Highlights of his coaching prowess include silver and bronze medals at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016, respectively, and a crowning victory at the FIBA World Cup in 2019. Furthermore, his teams clinched EuroBasket gold medals in 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2022, complemented by a bronze in 2017. These consistent and impactful results led the Spanish Council of Ministers to grant him the nation's highest sporting honor, recognizing his unique contribution to Spain's international athletic prestige. His tenure with the national team concluded after Spain's elimination from EuroBasket 2025, as he chose to fully commit to his new role with Real Madrid.

While stepping down from the national team, Scariolo's journey in Spanish basketball continues. He will now lead Real Madrid, preparing them for the challenges of the 2025–26 EuroLeague season and various domestic competitions. This marks his return to 'Los Blancos', having previously coached the club from 1999 to 2002. His extensive coaching career in Spain also includes successful periods with Unicaja Malaga (2003-2008) and Tau Ceramica (1997-1999, 2013-2014). Domestically, he has earned two ACB League championships and two Copa del Rey titles, solidifying his reputation as one of the most distinguished foreign coaches in Spanish basketball history. Beyond Europe, Scariolo's experience extends to the NBA, where he served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors from 2018 to 2021, contributing to their historic championship win in 2019. This diverse experience has further enhanced his standing as a versatile and triumphant tactician on both continents.

Sergio Scariolo's career stands as a testament to the power of unwavering dedication, strategic brilliance, and an enduring commitment to excellence. His profound impact on Spanish basketball, marked by numerous accolades and an unparalleled legacy of success, serves as an inspiring example for future generations in sports.
