An extraordinary art exhibition titled "The Class" is currently taking place at the University of Mary Washington’s duPont Gallery, paying homage to Professor Emerita of Art Carole Garmon. This unique showcase features an eclectic mix of works inspired by Garmon from her former students and alumni. Spanning a wide range of artistic mediums such as sculpture, digital creations, and conceptual pieces, the exhibit captures the essence of Garmon's 25-year teaching career. It highlights not only the technical skills imparted but also the profound mentorship she provided to aspiring artists over the years.

Carole Garmon, who retired in 2024 after dedicating a quarter-century to teaching at UMW, has left an indelible mark on countless students. Her influence extends far beyond the classroom walls, shaping the creative trajectories of many young talents. The exhibition runs until March 23rd and includes contributions from 24 artists whose work was profoundly influenced by their time studying under Garmon in Melchers Hall. Among the notable pieces displayed are intricate sculptures, thought-provoking installations, and evocative drawings that reflect each artist's personal journey.

This tribute goes beyond mere artistic expression; it embodies the deep bonds formed between teacher and student. During her tenure, Garmon fostered an environment where creativity thrived, encouraging students to push boundaries and redefine traditional notions of art. One example is Shanna Aberle, a graduate from 2024, who recalls how Garmon's dynamic teaching style challenged her preconceived ideas about art forms. Under Garmon's guidance, Aberle discovered new techniques and honed her individual strengths.

The opening event featured heartfelt testimonials from several participating artists, underscoring Garmon's pivotal role as both mentor and catalyst for their artistic growth. Claire McKinley '12 expressed gratitude for the empowerment Garmon instilled in her, enabling her to assert her identity amidst challenges. Such stories resonate throughout the exhibit, capturing moments of inspiration and camaraderie shared within the studio.

A distinctive feature of this exhibition is Garmon's personalized touch—a small drawing created specifically for each contributing artist, symbolizing the lasting connections forged during her illustrious career. As Shannon Petska, UMW Galleries Exhibition Coordinator, noted, these interactions exemplify the nurturing relationships characteristic of UMW's academic community.

In reflecting on her career, Garmon acknowledges the transformative impact her students have had on her perspective of art. She expresses immense gratitude for the opportunity to learn alongside them, emphasizing the reciprocal nature of education. Through "The Class," viewers gain insight into the vibrant tapestry of experiences and achievements woven together by Garmon and her protégés.

Beyond celebrating Garmon's legacy, the exhibition serves as a testament to the enduring power of mentorship in fostering creativity. By showcasing diverse works born out of dedicated instruction and unwavering support, "The Class" invites audiences to appreciate the evolving landscape of contemporary art through the lens of one remarkable educator's influence.
