In a significant financial move, Grupo Bimbo, the leading Mexican bakery company, and the National Development Bank (Nafin) have successfully raised a combined total of MXN 27.2 billion ($1.32 billion) through two-part bond sales. This event marks an increase in issuance activity within Mexico's local market. The funds will be utilized for various strategic purposes including investments, refinancing, and promoting economic growth.

Bond Sales Details and Market Impact

On a notable day in the financial calendar, Grupo Bimbo issued MXN 12.76 billion worth of seven-year bonds at a fixed rate of 10.06%, along with MXN 2.23 billion in three-year notes carrying a premium of 0.34% over the TIIE interbank lending rate. The bond sale attracted substantial interest, generating demand of approximately MXN 22 billion. According to the company’s Chief Financial Officer, Diego Gaxiola, these proceeds will be allocated towards investment, working capital, refinancing, and operational expenses. BBVA, HSBC, and Santander were appointed as joint bookrunners for this transaction, which received AAA ratings from S&P and Fitch on their local scales. Grupo Bimbo had previously accessed the local market in June 2024, issuing MXN 15 billion in sustainability-linked bonds.

Simultaneously, Nafin launched MXN 6.09 billion in sustainable bonds, offering 3.5-year notes at a spread of 0.25% over the TIIE rate and MXN 6.14 billion in 10.5-year bonds at a fixed rate of 10.13%. BBVA, Banorte, and Scotiabank served as underwriters for this deal, also earning AAA ratings from Fitch and HR on their local scales. Nafin plans to use the funds to provide loans to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and support projects that foster economic growth and financial inclusion in Mexico. In November, Nafin had raised MXN 5 billion by reopening its 2027 social bonds, following a MXN 11.6 billion issuance in September.

The recent resurgence in the local bond market reflects growing optimism about reduced external risks. Analyst Jacobo Rodríguez from Roga Capital noted that concerns over potential US import tariffs on Mexican goods appear to be easing. “We are observing a slight mitigation of risks externally, particularly concerning tariff policies,” he remarked, highlighting the positive outlook for continued market activity.

Perspective on the Market Activity

From a journalist's standpoint, these successful bond issuances signal a robust recovery in Mexico’s financial markets. The willingness of major institutions like Grupo Bimbo and Nafin to issue bonds suggests confidence in the stability and future prospects of the Mexican economy. For readers, this indicates a period of economic resilience and strategic planning, where both private and public entities are actively investing in long-term growth and sustainability initiatives. This trend not only supports domestic development but also enhances investor confidence in Mexico’s financial landscape.
