The Provo City School District has taken a significant step toward modernizing its educational infrastructure. On Tuesday, the Board of Education unanimously approved a lease revenue bond worth $70 million to fund the completion of the Timpview High School renovation project. This financial move aims to address critical safety concerns and outdated facilities at the school, while also preparing for future developments at the Dixon Middle School site. The bond issuance will lead to gradual increases in property taxes over the next two decades, starting from 2026. Notably, the project has already achieved a milestone with the opening of a newly rebuilt wing featuring advanced learning spaces and improved amenities.
The decision to issue the lease revenue bond came after careful consideration of the pressing needs at Timpview High School. Since the initial approval of an $80 million construction bond by voters in 2020, crews have been working diligently to demolish and reconstruct parts of the campus. The aging infrastructure, outdated safety codes, and seismic risks were among the primary reasons for the extensive renovation. In February 2025, students and faculty celebrated the opening of a newly renovated wing, which includes a Learning Staircase illuminated with blue LED lights, expanded Career and Technical Education (CTE) classrooms, spacious dance rooms, a new wrestling room, and additional parking spaces. These enhancements signify a major leap forward in providing a safer and more functional learning environment for students.
Despite the progress made, several areas of the school still require immediate attention. The cafeteria, for instance, is slated for a full remodel, underscoring the urgency of completing the project within the next four years. Board members acknowledged the financial burden on residents but emphasized the importance of ensuring safe educational facilities. "Public education is very important," said board member Gina Hales. "We need to provide this education in safe buildings." The board’s ability to approve the lease revenue bond without voter consent highlights the community's collective responsibility to support these essential upgrades.
The future plans for the Dixon Middle School site remain under review. A feasibility study is currently being analyzed to determine the best options for the area. The board, along with the newly formed Community Connections Committee, will continue to gather information and explore potential uses for the property. While the process will take time, the district remains committed to engaging the community in shaping the future of the Dixon area. Superintendent Wendy Dau expressed gratitude for the community’s support, noting that creating safe spaces for students is a shared responsibility.
The approval of the lease revenue bond marks a crucial phase in the transformation of Timpview High School. As the project progresses, it promises to deliver a modernized facility that meets contemporary educational standards and safety requirements. The district's efforts reflect a balanced approach to addressing immediate needs while planning for long-term improvements, all while fostering a collaborative relationship with the local community.
