He particularly highlighted how these factors were crucial in effectively neutralizing Greece's star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, during their semifinal clash.
Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün, at 23 years old, illuminated the collective ethos that propelled Türkiye into the EuroBasket 2025 Final, specifically underscoring the team's defensive mastery over Giannis Antetokounmpo in the semifinals. He expressed that their strength emanated from a deep-seated belief in each other and the strategic guidance of coach Ergin Ataman, whose authoritative pre-game address instilled unwavering confidence. Şengün detailed how every player contributed both offensively and defensively, performing with heart and a strong sense of camaraderie, which he felt was the true foundation of their dominant victory.
Sengun on Team Unity and Ataman's Confidence
Alperen Şengün, after leading Türkiye to the EuroBasket 2025 Final, emphasized the profound impact of team unity and the unwavering confidence instilled by head coach Ergin Ataman. Şengün explained that the team's philosophy revolved around collective strength, where every player was capable of scoring and defending. He highlighted that their success against Giannis Antetokounmpo in the semifinals stemmed from their aggressive, coordinated defense and a shared belief that they were the superior team, a conviction reinforced by Ataman's 30 years of coaching experience and his powerful pre-game motivation.
Şengün articulated the essence of Türkiye's victorious strategy, pointing to a profound sense of unity and mutual support among the players. He noted that the team’s effectiveness didn't rely on individual heroics but on a collective effort where each member excelled in both offensive and defensive roles. He quoted Coach Ataman's pre-game assertion, “We are a better team. I know this. I've been coaching for 30 years. If I say something, that's true,” underscoring how this message significantly boosted their morale. This collective spirit, coupled with Ataman's strategic foresight, enabled them to deliver a dominant performance, particularly in containing a formidable opponent like Antetokounmpo, proving that their concerted teamwork outweighed individual brilliance.
Defensive Masterclass: Containing Giannis Antetokounmpo
Türkiye's triumph over Greece in the EuroBasket 2025 semifinals was largely attributed to their exemplary defensive strategy, which effectively stifled Giannis Antetokounmpo. Şengün revealed that their approach wasn't just about individual matchups but involved a concerted team effort to pressure Antetokounmpo and provide help defense, especially around the paint. Despite his own double-double performance, Şengün downplayed his personal statistics, emphasizing that the team's aggressive play and superior execution on both ends of the court were the true determinants of their success in limiting Antetokounmpo's impact to just 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The defensive blueprint executed by Türkiye against Giannis Antetokounmpo was a masterclass in collective effort and strategic containment. Şengün elaborated that the primary goal was to relentlessly pressure Antetokounmpo, understanding his strength in driving to the basket. By strategically deploying Ercan Osmani and offering consistent help defense, particularly by collapsing into the paint, they managed to restrict his scoring opportunities. Şengün humorously noted Antetokounmpo's less developed passing game as an exploitable weakness, which allowed them to aggressively close down passing lanes and force difficult shots. This disciplined and aggressive defensive scheme showcased Türkiye's commitment to teamwork and their ability to neutralize one of basketball's most formidable players.
